Can winter golf be fun?
Just think of it as an even greater/more enjoyable challenge? So you're padded up like the Michelin Man, you can't feel your feet, your hands seem to have detached themselves from your arms and that's just getting the clubs out of the car. So to embrace and play good winter golf you have to "grab the bull by the horns".
Firstly make sure you load up on a warm hot bacon roll and hot coffee in the clubhouse before heading for the pro shop. Stock up on hand warmers, extra golf mittens, the appropriate woolley hat and you're now quite a few pounds lighter (I'm not talking about your weight), and ready for the first tee. Oh and remember to keep your golf balls warm as they will definitely go further!
Now our professional advice regarding swing and course management is as follows:
Reach for the driver and make sure you complete that back swing, you may creak a little, but I can guarantee that a short and quick back swing will certainly not get you that long straight drive away.
No doubt with the ball in the middle of the fairway you're thinking 5-iron? Well put that club back in the bag and take two extra, remember the hybrid/fairway metal with its wide sole is ideal from a soft fairway, and clubbing up will mentally slow your swing down, help you complete the backswing, yet still get the ball up pin high to the hole.
If you miss the green don't worry, you still have a chance. Reach for a 9 or 8-iron to play those chip shots and not the high lofted clubs. Softer conditions always mean less roll so use less loft, you may feel that you are going to over hit, but you won't!
Finally "get the ball past the hole". If you're well prepared you will have chosen a low spin ball this time of year to negate the soft conditions. Focus on a solid strike with the middle of the putter face and get the ball to the hole!
