Nathan Cook's Top Tip for better bunker play
What a great win last week for the extravagant Rickie Fowler (not sure about his shoes though?) in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. He played some amazing golf and there was one shot in particular that was extremely impressive. After making a double bogey on the 7th hole Rickie was faced with the dreaded 40 yard bunker shot and proceeded to hole out! Now this is one of the hardest shots in golf and will certainly scare a lot of amateur players.
So here are my top instructional tips when faced with this shot out on the course at Dibden GC:
Nice wide stance (wider than shoulder width with slightly more knee flex than usual) as this will give you extra balance.
Shuffle your feet into the sand and grip one inch down the club as this will ensure that a nice soft divot of sand under the ball is taken with no dreaded thinned shots.
Use a 9-iron rather than a lob wedge or sand wedge to help get the ball up to the hole.
Set up the same as a green side splash shot, slightly open stance and club face, if the club face is square it will cut into the sand too sharply when we are still trying to use the sole of the club.
Ball position ahead of centre.
Nice committed swing with a full follow through and "you're out and on"!
Hopefully with some much needed winter practice you can improve your all round bunker play, but remember if you need further help in fixing that bunker swing click here to get in touch or call in the pro shop for a chat to book a coaching session.
Good Luck - Nathan.
